Welcome to The Haute Critique,

I don’t know how you found us, but now you are here. In case you haven’t caught on yet, our mission is to use the perspective of the high point of view to examine the value, meaning, and overall texture of culture and cultural production. If that sounds snobbish or intense, try reading it again when you are in a different state of mind.

Now, The Haute Critique (THC for short) isn’t about typical stoner faire. Cheech and Chong are lovely and talented. However, any self-respecting fan of weed knows that it can have profound effects on TV, movies and music, even if the film isn’t a ‘stoner flick’. You can be watching a movie high and suddenly hit an insight. These are often discounted pejoratively as ‘being high’, but we think that sometimes those insights are genuine and unearth a new depth that goes missing to the normal viewer at sea level.

Alternatively, there are some works that are truly great and powerful, that gain little from the high point of view. This is certainly not a judgement call. I’m sure many of the best films and TV shows fit in this category. For these films, we want to make sure that fellow marinauts don’t waste their buzz.

You have the what and why, now for the who…

We are a loose band of butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers with an intense drive to explore. Astronomers, from the renaissance to today have often employed the parallax shift to uncover the mysteries of the universe. We are simply applying this technique to the goo that binds us as peoples.

Plop plop. Fizz fizz
Oh, what a relief it is.
